ABOUT US

Northern Lights Guardianship, formerly Northern Lights School, is a non-profit organization founded in 1997 by a group of dedicated parents seeking an educational foundation for their children that would nurture whole-child development and a life-long love of learning.  We have provided an alternative educational experience for area children for over 20 years and have offered parents a supportive community in which their children grow into confident and compassionate adult inspired to create positive change in the world.

Northern Lights has an exciting new home at a beautifully renovated school building at 26 Trudeau Road in Saranac Lake, NY offering early childhood education and continuity of care for infants and toddlers.

We are a certified NYS daycare, offering programming for infants and toddlers and preschool.  We strive to provide families with education, support, and community.  Many Northern Lights faculty are members of the Waldorf Education Association of North America.

Community service is one of our core values.  Parent support through free educational parent evenings, community forums, and childbirth classes are all central to this mission.

The Northern Lights Difference

Northern Lights understands that you're looking for the right place for your child. From our origins to now, we strive to provide a caring, nurturing, and supporting learning environment for your child.

So, what makes NL the right fit for your child?

Our Approach

  • No screens - Here, you'll never have to wonder how much screen time your child is getting. The answer is always "zero."

  • Outside is Our Classroom - NL incorporates multiple outside times each day. These times aren't "recess" - they're intentional outside times for play, bike riding, cooperative games, and more

  • A Community of Caregivers - With three to four classrooms each school year, NL rooms include a lead teacher and multiple co-teachers. This provides backup when we have a teacher who can't make it to work, but also means that your child interacts with a trusted community of caregivers.

  • Continuity of Care - Our classrooms are organized by a broad range of ages, which means your 0-3 year old and your 3-5 year old learns how to interact with children of different ages, helping the little ones as they grow. Our CoC approach also means your child's teachers are consistent over the years, rather than changing every six or 12 months.
