"I am struck by the fact that the more slowly trees grow at first,
the sounder they are at the core, and I think that the same is true of human beings."
– Henry David Thoreau
The Grade School program builds on the foundation laid by the Waldorf Preschool and Kindergarten. In the early grades, children meet the conceptual world through the imagination. Subjects such as language arts and arithmetic are introduced to the children through stories, art, movement, song, and bookwork. The curriculum achieves a balance between the sciences, the humanities and the arts. These subjects are taught in blocks of several weeks during the two-hour main lesson that begins the day. Students work with the content of the lesson, crafting their own original main lesson books which contain written text, compositions and art work.
Great care is taken to integrate into the basic program of reading, writing, and arithmetic with other important areas of knowledge such as basic science, world history and culture, music (including singing and playing an instrument), puppetry, drama, creative movement, physical education, painting and drawing, foreign language, handwork, cooking, gardening and basic carpentry.
Our approach is to encourage the child's curiosity and lead him or her to experience the excitement of discovery and learning. Of great importance in the learning process is the dedication, energy, and guidance provided by the child’s teachers who know how to present the thoughtfully structured, well integrated, relevant, and experiential curriculum in an exciting way.
